At the end of 1990, Emily came to the United States to pursue further education. Before that, life in China had been lived within a structured system — with parents, schools, and workplaces arranging almost everything. Opportunities to make independent, meaningful decisions were rare.
Like many first-generation immigrants, her arrival in America brought both excitement and uncertainty. After earning a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Emily found herself asking a deeper question: What is the true purpose of my journey here?
For her, the American Dream was never just about stability or a traditional 9-to-5 career. It was about the freedom to follow her heart, to make her own choices, and to build something meaningful.
